Although it’s said that even inexperienced climbers can reach the summit, it is still Japan’s highest mountain. Serious climbing equipment and sufficient physical fitness are necessary. Many people are probably worried about whether they will be able to reach the summit safely. If you are planning to climb Mount Fuji this summer, it is a good idea to hike a nearby mountain beforehand. By gaining some climbing experience beforehand, you are sure to make discoveries that will be useful when you climb Mount Fuji.

The distance from the fifth station to the eighth station is about 4km, and from the eighth station to the summit is about 3km. While the distance may seem short, the trail is on a steep mountain slope. It’s quite different from a typical 3-4km walk. For those with no prior hiking experience, it might feel several times more strenuous than walking on flat ground. There is an elevation difference of 1,471m between the starting point at the 5th station and the summit. At the 8th station, the elevation exceeds 3,000m, and many people experience altitude sickness, so caution is necessary. Frequent breaks and hydration are essential. Practicing before climbing Mt. Fuji is effective in determining your own appropriate resting pace and the amount of water you need for the climb.

Beginner: Mt. Tsukuba

Mount Tsukuba is often imagined as an easy climb via ropeway. However, if you’re using it as practice for climbing Mount Fuji, try climbing it without using the ropeway. There are wooden stairs and rocky areas, making it a more challenging climb than you might expect. If you reach the summit and don’t have enough energy left, you can use the ropeway or cable car to descend, so you can rest assured. It’s a good starting point.

Toyota Alphard (5 pax max): 95,000 Yen (One-day Round-trip) + toll (approx.: 4,100 Yen)

Practical Training: Mt. Tonotake

Mount Tō-no-dake, the highest peak in the Tanzawa Mountains, has five main climbing routes, allowing you to choose the one that suits your purpose. Even the shortest Ōkura Ridge course (commonly known as the “Idiot Ridge”) takes 6 hours and covers a distance of approximately 13.4 km. It is truly a mountain perfect for practicing long hikes on mountain trails. The climb starts with a gentle slope, but gradually becomes steeper and features sections with continuous stairs. It is ideal for practical training that simulates climbing Mount Fuji.

Toyota Alphard (5 pax max): 100,000 Yen (One-day Round-trip) + toll (approx.: 4,000 Yen)

Other Options to Explore Mt.
