Kamikochi is a scenic spot located at an altitude of 1500 meters on the Nagano Prefecture side of the southern part of the Hida Mountains, in the upper reaches of the Azusa River. It is part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park and is designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Special Natural Monument/Natural Protection Area. Kamikochi is a special place where general vehicle traffic is prohibited, and to get there you must transfer to a taxi or bus at Sawando at the foot of the mountain, except our chauffeur car departing from Tokyo. It’s a very beautiful place, a must-visit place while in Japan, the highest-altitude alluvial plain in Japan. Blessed with abundant nature, the chances of encountering Japanese macaques, wild boars, deer, and other animals are high. Myojin Pond, a scenic spot next to the inner sanctuary of Hotaka Shrine, is located within the shrine grounds and is considered sacred. The enshrined deity is Hotakami-no-kami, and the main hall is built in the Hotaka style. The boat ritual of the inner sanctuary is performed every year on October 8th, with boats being floated on Myojin Pond.

This year, 2026, Kamikochi will open on April 17th and close on November 15th. It boasts over a dozen hotels, including the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel and the Taishoike Hotel. Among them, the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel offers the same quality as the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and is a prestigious luxury mountain resort, having been in operation for 92 years.
